We're BACK Baby! (The Sequel)

Well, after a long haitus away from the food, the fun, the camaraderie that is the Coffee Crew, Mr. "I ain't wearin' no crummy Coffe Crew shirt!" himself, Rich, kicked us all in our collective butts and got us together for a CC Reunion, or as someone had put it, the Coffee Rebrew... although I may have just made that up, I'm not sure. Anyway, not only did we have the core crewers there; Steve & Sue, Rich, Joe, and myself; but Toni returned for her first REAL meeting, and special guest reader Michelle joined us for her first of hopefully many more appearances. As is customary, we started the night with some good food, hand-made by Rich himself who prepared chili for us, as well as ordering a pizza in case that wasn't enough. Not knowing if Joe was going to make it or not, we finished off the chili, only to have him show up, stuck with the pizza. Well Joe, as they say; you snooze, you.. um, miss the homemade chili.
After retiring to the reading room (Or the "basement" as Rich likes to call it) we started off the readings with a quick revisit of a prior Coffee Crew Blog Entry, just to get the ourselves reaquainted with... ourselves. Then the host himself read a piece specifically written for the crew, entitled "Hollywood, but not like she used to..." (Get it... Hollywood... Holly - would..... no? I didn't either) This piece was about today's trend in movies of abandoning all creativity and the massive amounts of films coming out that are either remakes, sequels, prequels, or otherwise based on other material. He laments the forgotten days of truly original stories, and despises today's atrocious attempts to make a quick buck through regurgitated material. OK, maybe 'despises' is too strong a word; suffice to say he's not happy about it.
Next was Michelle, who had two writings to share. First was a song she wrote about, of all things, coffee. Imagine that, reading a song about coffee at a coffee crew meeting... one would start to get ideas about us. Next she read a very thought-provoking piece entitled "Blind", or at least it had the word 'blind' in it, it was awhile ago after all. After reading the piece but before discussing it, she asked the audience what we felt the poem was about. Everyone gave their very intelligent and different interpretations of the meaning, as did I; however it was apparently NOT about old ladies in tights as I had thought, but in fact about her experiences with family members. Yes, you really had to be there to get where I was coming from.
Next up was Steve, who read, well, this ----> ( Seventh Grade Styles, Seventh Grade Stupidity)
Then Sue stepped up and read a musing about waiting in lines; the ups and downs, proper line etiquette, and what to do if you find yourself behind an old lady in tights. That last part is a lie, Sue didn't mention old ladies in tights once.
After that and a little discussion, Steve and Sue were wisked away by the "We Have to Relieve the Babysitter" fairy, and the remaining crewers congregated into two separate groups, Rich, Michelle and I discussing "Lost"; Toni & Joe discussing Toni's Stargate fanfic and other topics. Rich's new kitten, Newton, made a very brief appearance before noticing everyone looking at him and scuttering off. Eventually the night broke up and we all went about our separate ways, happily knowing the Coffee Crew still hasn't lost it's touch.

  • Thank you, Paul, for the blog update. I'll get the next one, I promise.

Let me just add a few things to this:

First, the statistics and trivia: The meeting took place on Saturday, January 27 (2007, for those of you who are too lazy to figure this out based on the date of the post) and it was meeting #25. Not too shabby, eh? (Reading through the past blogs, you may be inclined to think that this was meeting number 24, but there was a meeting that went undocumented on April 8, 2005. Yes, I have non-blog-related records of this stuff. Thymen-f**kin-age, folks! Timeline authors like Joe and swamp-nerds like Rich should appreciate this keen eye for details.)

I think the agreed "new-school" idea is to try to do the Coffee Crew monthly now—which is disgustingly infrequent compared to our former "weekly" trend, but ambitiously often compared to our "less than annually" trend that started happening around April of 2005! Damn, the Crew has been running on decaf! But everyone seems to think a once a month is doable, so I say, let's do it!!

I will host the next one and will be contacting you all shortly to set it up.

And why shouldn't we keep doing it? You'd think we never missed a beat, because this last meeting was as fun and laugh-filled as all of the others have been.

It was great to have the old "core" back together—the five most common Coffee Crew attenders—and to have some newer blood in the form of second-time attender Toni and first timer Michelle, who jumped right in and started reading and stuff. Very cool. Next month: Mike Schiavetta and Rich's friend with the 3 kids!

And, here's an interesting piece of Crew Trivia: while I remain, at our "silver" gathering, the only Crew member to have been in attendance at every single one of the 25 meetings thus far, this did mark the first time that I wasn't present for every single MINUTE of every gathering, having had to leave earlier than the rest of you. It was hard for me, but it was what I had to do.

    See you all soon!
